[Class 34 (ii).] Tunnel drying ovens with air circulation therethrough have in combination internal and external heat recovery means transferring heat from the evacuated to the incoming air. The material to be dried passes in trucks on tracks 1, 2, air being circulated spirally over heaters 3 by fans 5 on a shaft 6. The hot, moist air is drawn by a fan 10 through inlets in a tube 12 above the heaters 3 into internal heat exchange tubes 3x, through a conduit 11 to a chimney 13. Reversing dampers 8, 9 in the fan casing are turned at intervals to determine the direction of air circulation. Fresh air enters through an external heat exchanger 22 through which the moist, hot air is exhausted from the tubes 3x to the chimney 13. The fresh air is then further heated in spiral passage over the internal heat exchange tubes 3x and heaters 3 to the tube 12, whence it is drawn through the tubes 3x to the chimney. The external heat exchanger 22 may be placed between the tubes 3x and the chimney, or between the tube 12 and the tubes 3x. In the second case, fresh air passes through the heat exchanger 22 to the outside of the tubes 3x at their outlet end. In a third arrangement, two external heat exchangers 22 are used, one between the tube 12 and the tubes 3x, and the other between the outlet of the tubes 3x and the chimney, so that fresh air passes first through the heat exchangers 22, then over the internal heat exchanger 3x and internal heaters 3 to the tube 12.
