Abstract
Valve discs, gaskets, and similar articles, are moulded from a composition consisting of asbestos in a spun or woven condition impregnated with a potentially reactive resinoid, for example, a phenolic resinoid or cresol-formaldehyde. The asbestos material is preferably first impregnated with the binder and then subjected to preliminary heating, for example to 85 DEG C., to eliminate the solvent. For valve discs, superposed blanks of this material are then subjected to a pressure of 5000 to 9000 lbs. per square inch in a cold state in a mould which is subsequently heated to 125 DEG to 160 DEG C. to convert the resinoid to an insoluble and infusible form. There is preferably about 25 to 45 per cent by weight of resinoid in the finished articles. The resinoid may, moreover, be applied wholly or in part in a pulverized form. In place of the woven asbestos there may be substituted, particularly for the inner portions of the articles, a mass of loose thread ends obtained by shearing the woven fabric after impregnation. A lubricant, such as butyl stearate, may be incorporated in the resinoid binder to facilitate the discharges of the articles, whilst hot, from the mould.
