[Class 98 (ii).] A machine for applying colouring liquids or varnishes to opposite sides of a kinematograph film, such as a subtractive two-colour film, is provided with two sets of rollers, brushes &c., for treating the two sides of the film in succession, and with means for permitting each roller &c. to be displaced individually into and out of contact with the film. As shown, the film 12 is fed from a reel 11, over a sprocket 13 and guide rollers 10, 9, into engagement with rollers 3 which transfer treating liquid from troughs 4 to one side of the film ; and is then fed by sprockets 17, 19 and over guide rollers 9<1>, 10<1> into engagement with a second set of rollers 3<1> which transfer treating liquid from troughs 4<1> to the other side of the film. A sprocket 20 delivers the film to a take-up reel. Spring- urged rollers 14, 22 press the film against the sprockets 13, 20. The spindles 2 of the rollers 3, 31 are guided in slots 7, 7<1> in the machine frame, and are carried by pivoted bell-crank levers adapted to be locked in one or other of two positions, whereby any one roller may be moved by hand into or out of engagement with the film. The sprockets 13, 20, and the rollers 3, 3<1> when raised to engage the film, are driven by worm gearing from shafts driven from any power source through a pulley 27 and gearing 28 .. 33, the sprockets and rollers being rotated in opposite senses. The rollers are preferably narrower than the width of the film to prevent clogging of the feed perforations, and they may dip into troughs containing different liquids.
