Abstract

341,459. Road vehicle springs. STIRLING, C., 16, Bents Drive, Ecclesall, and UNITED STEEL COS., Ltd., Westbourne Road, both in Sheffield. Sept. 16, 1929, No. 28013. [Classes 108 (ii) and 108 (iii).] In vehicle spring-mountings of the kind in which lateral tilting of the frame relatively to the axle may take place without twisting the leaves of the springs, the ends of the springs are connected to the frame or axle by cylindrical bearing surfaces adapted to allow rotational movement of the spring about either or both of two axes. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the ends of several of the leaves 18, 19, 20 are mounted in a two-part cylinder 16, 17 having its axis arranged in the direction of the length of the spring. The cylinder 16, 17 is further mounted in a two-part cylinder 22a, 22b which is rotatable in the casing 13 about a transverse horizontal axis. One of the leaves 20 of the spring is formed with an upward circular projection 20a which engages in the top half 17 of the inner cylinder and thus allows movement of the spring about a vertical axis. The whole assembly may slide laterally in the casing 13 within limits set by the end cover-plate 13a. The recess in the casing 13 and the recesses in the part 22a of the outer cylinder through which the spring passes are shaped to allow the necessary pivotal movements. The half-cylinder 22b is recessed at 22c to allow end play of the leaves 18, 19. In modifications the inner cylinder 16, 17 is mounted in a ring which is carried by trunnions. Instead of the projection 20a, the end of the leaf 20 may be recessed or perforated and engaged by a spigot projecting from one of the halves of the cylinder 16, 17. In a further modification the spigot connection 20a is dispensed with and the leaves are free to slide endwise in the cylinder 16, 17. One of the semi-cylindrical bearing surfaces may be formed integral with or secured to one of the leaves.
