Abstract
341,194. Substation equipment. ZULLO, S., 757, Bergen Avenue, Jersey City, New Jersey, U.S.A. Nov. 19, 1929, No. 35368. [Class 40 (iv.)] In systems in which when the called party is absent a message is transmitted mechanically to a caller and the caller's reply is recorded on a cylinder, an instrument of the type known under the Registered Trade Mark "Dictaphone" is used, the instrument being fitted with a single cylinder and with two sound boxes, one sound box transmitting the message recorded on the record and returning to its normal position after each call and the other recording the caller's reply. The second sound box moves a definite distance for each call, a pointer, attached to it and moving over a calibrated scale, indicating how many messages have been received. When a call is received relay 93, Fig. 4, energizes completing a circuit for magnet 67 to pull up. Magnet 67 by means of the chain 66 pulls down the pin 64, moving cam 59 anticlockwise to allow the lever 29 to raise the receiver 12 and to start the dictaphone motor. The two sound boxes 21 and 35, which are connected to the telephone by speaking tubes 22 and 36, move along the rod 19, the box 21 dictating the message recorded on the cylinder 17. When the message is finished the sound box is unclutched from the rod 19 and moved back to its initial position, but the sound box 35 continues its travel and records a message from the calling subscriber. When the sound boxes began to move, the head 78, Fig. 2, moved to the left raising the arm 74 which tilts rod 72 to remove the catch 55 from the wheel 52 and to release the governor shaft 76. The timing device motor 47 drives the wheel 52 at a speed regulated by the governor. When wheel 52 has made a complete revolution the catch 55 re-engages the wheel 52 and the pin 54 moves the pivoted lever 69 which raises arm 65 and thus moves cam 59 in a clockwise direction. Arm 29 is restored to normal to disconnect the calling line and to stop the dictaphone. The pointer 96 moves one division of the scale 95 for each call.
