Abstract

950,739. Exchange systems. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. May 26, 1961 [June 2, 1960], No. 19539/60. Heading H4K. In a data transmission system in which data may be transmitted in either direction between a central station and one or more outstations, the data transmitted in one direction being subsequently transmitted in the opposite direction and checked at the originating station, data are transmitted from an outstation to the central station in digital form as different combinations of a series of tones, and from the central station to an outstation in verbal form. As described, one or more outstations (Fig. 1) are connected via normal exchange lines 11, 20 to a central data-processing station (Fig. 2 or Fig. 6). Operation of key 12 at a substation connects up the sending mechanism and manipulation of the keyboard 13 then controls the sending of the digital signals to the central station whereat they are temporarily stored. After a convenient number of digits have been sent, operation of the " Group End " key 13b causes the transmission of a signal to the central station, and the closure of contacts 15. The latter connects up amplifier 16 and loud speaker 16, and the former causes the central station to repeat back the data in verbal form by selection from a library of verbal records (in TIM). If the played back data agree with those transmitted from the outstation, the operation of the " Conform " key 13c by the outstation operator causes the data at the central station to be transferred from the temporary store to a permanent store (magnetic tape or drum, teleprinter &c.). The operation then continues transmission. If the played back data does not agree with those transmitted, operation of the " Cancel " key 13d erases the stored data. Alternatively, operation of the " Group End " key 13b causes the central station to repeat the play back for a second check. If the data originate from the central station, the outstation operator keys back the received data in digital form for comparison with the original data in a comparator 39 (Fig. 6), agreement being indicated by an automatic verbal announcement, followed by the next group of data. Incorrectness results in a repeat of the data group for further check.
