Abstract
Ribbons, tapes, and like products of flattened cross section are made by applying heat and pressure to filaments of thermoplastic derivatives of cellulose, or to twisted or untwisted yarns, threads, cords, woven or knitted narrow strips of fabric, e.g. tapes or braid, or knitted tubes of such materials. Heat and pressure may be applied continuously or intermittently or in varying degree over the length of the filaments &c. The filaments may be treated in the course of their production or subsequently thereto. Pressure may be applied by one or more pairs of plain, embossed, corrugated or fluted rollers, the pressure between the rollers being preferably adjustable, and at least one roller of each pair being heated. Alternatively, a heated roller of large diameter may be used in conjunction with two or more rollers of smaller diameter. Dyes, metal powders &c. may be applied during the treatment, e.g. by supplying a printing paste to one of the rollers. Ornamental effects may also be obtained by introducing yarns or threads of other materials, e.g. cotton or reconstituted cellulose, or tapes or wires, into the filaments to be united, in which event differential dyeing effects may be subsequently attainable. Striped effects may be obtained by uniting previously coloured filaments, and further colour effects may be produced by intermittently applying dyestuffs, preferably in solution in an organic solvent, either to the filaments or to the ribbons &c. The products may also be waterproofed, and given a high lustre, by passing them between wax-applying rollers during or after their production. Reference is made to the manufacture of products from cellulose formate, acetate, propionate, butyrate and nitrate, thiocarbamic and alkoxy-alkacyl esters of cellulose, methyl, ethyl and benzyl cellulose, and the condensation products of cellulose and glycols &c. Specifications 248,147, 249,946, and 328,312, [all in Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.], are referred to.ALSO:Ribbons, tapes, and like products of flattened cross-section are made by applying heat and pressure to filaments of thermoplastic derivatives of cellulose, or to twisted or untwisted yarns, cords, woven or knitted narrow strips of fabric, or knitted tubes of such materials.
