Abstract
340,769. Airships. WAAP, F., 18, Eisenstuckstrasse, Dresden, Germany. Dec. 23, 1929, No. 39304. Convention date, Dec. 21, 1928. [Class 4.] An airship has its body which encloses the passenger compartments and gas-bags, formed with upper and lower surfaces of large extent compared with the side surfaces so that during forward motion air is forced beneath the aircraft when set at a small angle to the line of thrust. It is driven by propellers n mounted on gondolas m that can be tilted, or by propellers that can be tilted relatively to the gondolas, which are mounted beneath an upper supporting surface c extending along the sides of the machine. The body encloses a large chamber r, shown in cross section in Fig. 5, for gas and smaller gas containers s. Cabins p are arranged along the sides and a chamber t is provided for ballast and freight. Retractible wheels v or sledge runners, and pontoons are arranged to give the correct angle to the aircraft at starting from the ground or water. The gondolas are mounted on trunnions and are tiltable from the interior of the airship by pinions and curved racks. Port and starboard rudders o, Fig. 2, and centrally placed elevators h are provided. Alternatively the elevators may be amidships. The centre of gravity may be adjusted by pumping water or compressed air from one end of the vessel to the other. Fig. 8 shows an alternative cross section wherein stepped surfaces d are provided on the sides of the airship in addition to the upper plane c.
