Abstract
Oil resembling turpentine is obtained from the distillation residues of crude turpentine, gum resins, and like resinous substances by distilling the residues at 100-200 DEG C. in a current of hydrogen in presence of a catalyst, or by first treating in a closed vessel with hydrogen in presence of a catalyst and then distilling. For example, colophony, resin pitch, or rosin oil is mixed with 1 per cent of nickel powder, or nickel powder absorbed by earthenware fragments or by infusorial earth, and is distilled to 153 DEG C. while hydrogen is passed in.
