[Class 51 (i).] In a furnace grate in which transversely arranged firebars of zig-zag or waved formation are supported in an inclined position so as to cause the air to flow at the same angle as that taken by the combustion products, interlocking means, which may also serve to space the bars, are provided to prevent any individual bar from lifting. As shown projections d<2> on one face of each bar interlock with lugs d, d<1> on the opposed face of the adjacent bar. The fuel surfaces of the bars are preferably rounded and a number of bars at each end of the grate may be shallower and more closely spaced than those in the middle. When forced draught is used the lower edges of the bars may be cut as shown in Fig. 5 to accommodate the upper edges of partitions G which support removable floor-plates g<1>. The loose dead-plates E at the ends of the grate are formed each with one edge to correspond with the shape and inclination of the bars, and the sideplates A have supporting ledges a, which may be perforated for the passage of ash.
