Abstract
338,796. Lodge-Cottrell, Ltd., (International Precipitation Co., Inc.). Jan. 14, 1930. Gases, treating electrically.-In apparatus for the electrical precipitation of gases, the electrodes comprise a number of elongated metallic supporting or positioning members, and a number of sections of semi-conducting material, such as concrete, cement, terra-cotta, &c., strung on the said members, each electrode section engaging a number of the members. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the collecting electrodes 3 are formed as vertical plates, divided both vertically and horizontally into sections 13, which are supported by suitable members 14 connected at their upper ends to a supporting beam 12. Each section has vertical passages 15 (see Fig. 7) to receive the supporting rods 14, and means, such as a beam 16 extending along the bottom of each electrode, are provided to support the sections 13. To assist in holding the sections in alignment, and to prevent the passage of the discharge directly to the metal rods 14, the sections are preferably provided with interlocking and groove means 18 and 19 (see Figs. 3 and 8) and also with metallic sleeves 20 in the passages 15, embedded in the concrete &c. and closely fitting on the rods 14. In the case of precipitators of the flue type (see F'igs. 11 and 12), the collecting electrode consists of a number of tubular sections 27, with passages 28, fitting over suspension rods 30. The same principle may also be applied to the discharge electrode, as shown the above Figures. The electrodes may be supported from beneath instead of being suspended as described. The apparatus may be used with alternating current for the agglomeration of suspended matter in the gases, as well as with rectified alternating current for the precipitation thereof.
