Abstract

338,545. Foss, L., and Foss, R. July 15, 1929. Translucent paper; paper, treating with special materials. - A method of making translucent parchment consists in dipping paper into a heated mixture of linseed oil, reinforced Japan oil, and turpentine. After drying, the treated paper is coated with a pyroxylin or other quick drying cement that remains transparent after drying, a stiff brush being used to produce a rough stippled effect during drying. Configurations are then outlined by means of pyroxylin or other coloured paints applied by means of a spray gun and stencils. Raised lines of dark pyroxylin cement or other pasty material are then applied to the outlines by means of a lining gun employing compressed air. When the relief work is dry a coating of burnt umber ground in oil is applied, and immediately rubbed off so as to fill the crevices and to polish the raised portions. Before this coating dries, powdered stone is rubbed into it to produce an antique effect.
