Abstract

338,443. Happel, O. Jan. 27, 1930. Forced ventilation; air, heating and conditioning. - In a method of heating a hot-house, air from the hot-house, with the optional addition of fresh air is drawn with relatively high velocity through hot-water or steam heaters, the condenser apparatus of a power-house preferably forming the source of heat, and is returned to the hot-house through underground chamber, said chambers preferably having openings at the top in order that a portion of the hot air may pass into the hot house through the soil, which is thereby heated and aerated. As shown in Fig. 6, a blower 7 draws air through heaters 5 into flues 12 from which it passes through chambers 11 roofed with slabs 3 of ferroconcrete, preferably porous or perforated, upon which the soil 4 is placed. The chambers 11 communicate with return flues 12<1> roofed with grids 15 for the return of the. air to the atmosphere of the hot-house. The walls of the supply flues 12 are based on the levelled subsoil or on a dressing of ash applied thereto and their roofs may be formed as paths for trucks and the like. Each chamber 11 may be partially or wholly cut off by means of dampers. A ventilating shaft 17 with dampers 18 allows a quantity of fresh air to be drawn in, this addition being balanced by the normal leakage of air from the hot-house. The air may be humidified by water sprayed on to the heaters by sprayers 19. Each heater has a nest of quincuncially disposed tubes of elliptical cross section at the middle portion, Fig. 5, and with cylindrical ends adapted to fit, into water chambers. When supplied with hot water or steam from a power house, the ordinary condenser may have in parallel with it a water cooled condenser, the water from which is pimped through the hot-house heaters, or, alternatively the heaters themselves may be used as supplementary condensers. In a modification, Fig. 9, a mixing chamber 7<1> communicating with an air shaft 17<1> is disposed between the heating elements 5 and the blowers 7. Admission of fresh air into this chamber is controlled by a damper 18<1> and the admission of air from the hot-house by a damper 22<1>. In hot weather the damper 18' may be opened and the heaters partially or wholly cut off, the blowers then serving merely to ventilate the house.
