Abstract

338,317. Norton Co. Oct. 19, 1928, [Convention date]. Block, rubber, and like apparatus; disc apparatus; spindle mountings. -In a lapping-machine having a rotating upper lap 14, a stationary or rotatable lower lap 12, and a movable or stationary work cage 15, the upper lap is raised and lowered by power-operated means, provision also being made for manual operation and for varying the pressure of the lap upon the work. The lap 14 is mounted on a support 18 adjustably carried on a vertical shaft 20 by means of members 23, 24 having contact on a spherical surface 25, screws 26 serving to allow of adjustment; the members may be left free during lapping and the lap allowed to adjust itself during the working of the machine. The shaft 20 is mounted in bearings 36, 37 in a sleeve 35 slidably keyed in a housing 31, and the sleeve has thereon teeth 45 engaged by a pinion carried by a shaft 47, which carries a worm-wheel 48 driven by a worm 50 slidably keyed on a shaft 52, and pressed by a spring 54. The worm may be driven in either direction, through gearing 67, 66 from a shaft 65 adapted to be driven, through a friction clutch 70, by open and crossed belts 61, 62, the clutch member 70 being movable by an arm 73 moved by a link 76 and a hand lever 77. In order to arrest the lap at any predetermined position in its upward or downward movement, the lever 77 is provided with an arm 80 carrying a yoke member 81 which projects into the housing 31 and straddles a screw 85, rotatably mounted on the sleeve 35 and carrying a non-rotatable nut 90, adjustable by rotation of the screw. Contact of the nut, or of a collar 86 on the screw, with the member 81 moves the lever 77, throwing the clutch into neutral position. The position of the lap is adjusted by hand by a wheel 100, which may be clutched to the shaft 52, and, with the lap resting on the work, the pressure may be adjusted by rotation of the wheel which causes compression of the spring 54, with consequential increase in the pressure of the lap on the work; the spring also yields if pressure on the lap is excessive. Specification 254,919 is referred to.
