Abstract

338,294. Prosperity Co., Inc., (Assignees of Davis, E.). Oct. 29, 1928, [Convention date]. Ironing-presses.-In a press type shirt ironing- machine wherein the buck is provided with an upstanding n eckband d clamp and the press head with a corresponding cut out portion, positive means are provided for moving the press head laterally along the buck as the press reaches closed position, whereby the portions of the shirt immediately adjacent the neck band are ironed, the head 2, Fig. 3, is secured to a shaft 28 slidably carried in bearing brackets 29, 30 secured to the arms of the bifurcated head lever 5. The shaft extending across the gap between the arms near the front ends thereof. Pins 33 are ball-and-socket jointed to the head and pass through apertures in the arms of the head lever, and spring 32 are compressed between the arms and the heads of the pins to provide a compensating or rocking mounting for the head. A cam 36 is secured to the shaft 28 and a spring 41 normally presses the shaft to the left, Fig. 3, in which position the cut out portion of the head is removed from the neckband clamp 22. Another cam 37 is rotatably mounted on the shaft 28 and is prevented from moving to the left by a spacing sleeve 39. The cam 37 is provided with an arm 40 pivoted to a rod 42, Fig. 2, slidably mounted in a block 46 pivoted to a rigid support 45. The radius of the arc of movement of the press head about the centre 6 is greater than that of the rod about the pivot of the block 46 so that as the press closes, the differential movement of the rod and head swings the arm 40 clockwise, Fig. 2, to engage the cam 37 with the cam 36 to move the shaft 28 and head 2 to the right, Fig. 3, against the spring 41 and into the position wherein the cut out portion of the head contacts with the neckband clamp. A spring 47, Fig. 2, between the headed end of the rod 42 and the block 46 tends to prevent sliding of the rod in the block. whilst a weaker spring 49 between a shoulder 51 on the rod and a cross arm 50 extending between the arms of the head lever acts in opposition thereto to provide a yielding movement of the press head. The cut out portion of the head is provided with a lip 52, Fig. 6, which engages under the loop 24 forming part of the neckband clamp 22 carried by the buck 1.
