Abstract

338,282. Avery, Ltd., W. &. T., Benton, W. A., and Goff, P. E. Sept. 26, 1929. Testing grain and seeds.-A method for determining the degree of saturation of bodies or materials which have been immersed in a liquid, for example the saturation of barley during the steeping prior to malting, consists in submitting a sample of the steeping material to a centrifugal drying operation for a constant period of time, determining the weight of the steeped sample after the drying operation, then re-immersing the sample and repeating the drying, weighing and immersing operations until two consecutive identical weighings are obtained, thereby determining that saturation has been attained. In carrying out. the determination a sample vessel 3 containing a predetermined weight of grain is removed from the steeping vat and placed on a spindle 6 within a container 13. A suspended weight 12 is released so as to impart a predetermined rotation to the spindle and thus, by centrifugal action, drain the surface moisture from the grain. The vessel 3 is then suspended from a spring-controlled lever 18 carrying a pointer 19 which indicates the percentage increase in weight on a chart 20. The operations of steeping, drying and weighing are repeated until two identical percentages are indicated.
