Abstract

338,256. Heenan & Froude, Ltd., and Walker, G. H. Sept. 7, 1929. Clutches and speed-varying mechanism.- Hydraulic clutches of the type described in Specification 307,583 are provided with means for controlling the outlet of liquid therefrom to regulate the amount of slip. In one form, one element of the clutch is secured to a rotary casing member B<3>, Fig. 1, cooled liquid is supplied through a valve e and passages b<1>, and the outlet liquid escapes at the clutch periphery into the casing B<3> provided with the spring-loaded valves at B<4>. The valves may comprise a ball f, Fig. 3, acted on by a spring f<1>, the pressure of which may be varied by a screw f<2> held in the desired position by a spring strip f<3>, or a spring-loaded mushroom valve opened by a lever controlled manually or automatically. In another form, the outlet liquid passes along passages g<1>, g<5>, Fig. 5, to valves g<6>. The clutch is provided with air inlets b, and with ball or balanced valves b<3>, which are open when the clutch is at rest and are closed centrifugally when it is rotating. In order to keep its speed constant, the driving shaft A may be provided with a centrifugal pump D, Fig. 2, supplying the clutch through a spring loaded valve d<2>.
