Abstract
338,205. Armstong Cork Co., (Assignees of Prentis, H. W.). Oct. 9, 1928, [Convention date]. Rugs and mats.-A method of decorating hard surface covering materials such as linoleum and felt base material consists in producing a succession of rug patterns on one side of a strip of material, and applying a running pattern to the other surface so that the strip can be cut up into a number of individual rugs or mats without difficulties due to non-registration of the patterns. Cross borders may afterwards be applied to the running pattern. Preferably the coatings applied to the two sides are such that their coefficients of expansion are the same. The rug patterns may be applied by printing, and the running pattern by spraying. The web of material is printed on one side in a block printing machine, for example, with a series of patterns such as shown in Fig. 4. After drying, the material 6, Fig. 2, is passed under a battery of sprayers 7, and under a roller 8 which prints borders 9 on the back of the material. The length is then cut up into mats at the edges of the pattern on the front, and the pattern on the back is completed as shown in Fig. 3 by printing or brushing on borders 10. Rugs or mats are thus made reversible.
