Apparatus for feeding the batch to a glass-melting furnace comprises a reciprocating shoot or trough 15, 16 within which is a fixed shovel 43 adapted, as the trough moves rearwardly, to effect delivery into the furnace 1 of the charge material fed to the trough during its forward movement. The trough consists of two parts 15, 16 hinged together at 17 and secured by bolts 18, the inclined portion 16 being formed at its lower end with a depending lip 19 which serves, on the forward stroke of the trough, to propel, as shown in Fig. 3, the material previously deposited on the surface of the molten glass through the archway 2 leading to the main part of the furnace. The batch is supplied to the trough 15 from a hopper 7 which is fitted at its lower end with a pivoted gate 10 adjusted in position by a nut 13. Reciprocation of the trough is effected by an electric motor 30 which drives, through gearing 33, 34, 37, 38, a cam 40 in the track 41 of which engages a roller 42 mounted on the pivoted lever 29. A connecting-rod 27 is pivoted at one end to the lever 20 and at the other end to a cross-head 28 which is carried by a pair of guide-rods 20 rigidly secured to the trough and guided by rollers 21, 22. The rollers 21 are movable vertically by the handwheel 26<1> to adjust the position of the lip 19 in relation to the surface of the molten glass. The shovel 43 is carried by a rod 44 pivoted to the framework 3 at 45, a turnbuckle 46 being provided for adjusting the effective length of the rod 44.
