Urea-formaldehyde resins. - Urea is reacted with formaldehpde in aqueous solution to form an initial condensation product, the solution is concentrated, a polybasic acid-polyhydric alcohol condensation product is then added, and the solution again concentrated. In carrying out the process it is preferable to add the urea in stages, the acidity being adjusted during the process by means of triethanolamine. In an example, formaldehyde in 30 to 40 per cent solution is reacted with urea in the proportion of 2 to 2.2 mols. of formaldehyde to one mol. of urea, the pH value being brought to from 5 to 6 by the addition of triethanolamine. After initial condensation the pH is increased to from 7 to 8 and the solution evaporated to a thick syrup. A non- aqueous solvent such as butyl alcohol or the monomethyl ether of ethylene glycol is added and the boiling continued, additional urea being introduced to combine with the remaining free formaldehyde. The final ratio of formaldehyde to urea should be less than 2 : 1, preferably 1.75: 1. Sufficient of a solution in alcohol of a polybasic acid-polyhydric alcohol is then added to lower the pH value to between 3.5 and 5, and the mixture is dried by heating in vacuo. The resulting powder may be moulded under pressure and finally cured by heating without pressure. Part of the urea in the process may be replaced by thiourea.
