Peeling and cleaning vegetables.-In a machine for peeling and cleaning vegetables, the rotary abrading disc 34 is provided with handle members 92 which normally project downwardly into the annular channel 71 and eject the peelings through a tangential outlet to a strainer 75, but which may be lifted upwards and grasped when the disc 34 is to be removed. The handles 92 are arranged immediately behind the protuberances 46, 47 and fit in recesses therein. The disc 34 has an upturned boss 35 into which a cup-like sleeve 36 is fitted. A bearing sleeve 38 fits within the sleeve 36 and both sleeves are cut away to engage a driving-pin 40. If the disc 34 should stick on the shaft 30, a drawing- screw may be inserted in the plugged hole 42. The container 14 has an integral bottom with an upstanding wall 83 which co-operates with a flange 80 on the disc 34 to form the channel 71. The inner walls of the container are not abrasive, but have vertical flutings 50 as shown in Fig. 2, to retard the rotation of the vegetables and to assist their upward circulating movement. The cover 60 is hinged to the container and has a feed hopper 63 with a depending rim which is encircled by a spray ring 64 connected to the pipe 67 by swivel pipe so that it can be swung out of the wav when the disc 34 is to be removed. The outlet door 110 is situated in a shoot 102 and is secured to a strap 108 pivoted at 105 to the upper edge of the container. A locking- handle 114, pivoted to the lower end of the strap 108, engages a projection 116, which runs across the shoot and acts also as a dam, and forces the door against the packing-ring 112. A motor 21 connected by a flexible coupling to worm gearing 28, 29 in a lubricant chamber 12, rotates the disc shaft 30 which runs in a packed gland 86. Water which leaks past the flanges 80, 83 is checked by the flange 82 but some water drains from the port 88. Water which leaks from the door 110 drains back into the channel 71 through the port 118.
