Abstract

Buildings and chambers; air, controlling circulation, direction of flow, humidity, and pressure of.-A drying system suitable for withering tea includes a house having a number of floors constituting treating chambers with means to pass a supply of drying air in a hot, or cooled or humidified or cooled and humidified condition, or at reduced pressure in either direction through any one or more of the chambers. By operating a butterfly valve 4, Fig. 1, a suction fan 5 is put in communication with all the floors at either end of the house shown in elevation and plan. Valves 10, 10<a> control the distribution of the air to every floor. A valve 8 determines whether the air drawn by the fan through the inlet 3 has previously passed through a heating unit 6 or a unit 7 where the air is cooled or humidified or cooled and humidified. The tea is spread on trays or shelves 11 within chambers provided with substantially airtight movable doors or partitions 14, Fig. 2, to shut off passage ways 13. The doors 14 which comprise flaps shutting with a toggle action may be used when opened as delivery or charging shoots for the tea. In a modification, Fig. 3, a treating chamber is placed in the centre of the withering floor and has units 15 containing tiltable trays or shelves substantially filling the chamber, some or all of the units being adapted to be withdrawn laterally from the chamber. Airtight doors may be fixed to alternate units at the ends 16. The units may be moved in and. out on rails 17, Fig. 4, with or without castors 18 or travel on wheels and castors.
