Reaping-machines and harvesting- machines.-In order to enable a combined harvesting and thrashing machine to operate efficiently on hilly as well as flat country, each ground wheel 24 of the harvester 6 is mounted on an axle 23 supported by a crank 22 journaled on a stub axle 21 carried by a cross-member 15 secured to the frame 7 of the harvester. Pivotally mounted on ears 26, 27 secured to the crank arm is a screw shaft 28 which is supported near its end by a bifurcated carrier 29 having trunnions 31, 32 supported by the arms 36, 37 of a yoke 34, the shank of which is journaled in the upper end of a bracket 11 which is mounted on the main axle 9 of the harvester. A hub 41, Fig. 3, is in engagement with the shaft 28 between the ends of the carrier 29, and a wheel 43 integral with the part 41 gears with a wheel 44 mounted at the upper end of a shaft 46 mounted in bearings on a boss 49 projecting from the carrier 29. A friction wheel 51 on the lower end of the shaft 46 is adapted to be engaged by one of two friction cones 52, 53 mounted on a shaft 54, the shaft itself being mounted so that it can be moved axially so as to engage either of the cones with the friction wheel 51, thus causing upward or downward movement of the shaft 28 and of the ground wheel. The shaft 54 may be driven by means of a chain 66 passing over a sprocket wheel 56 and a sprocket 67 on a shaft 69 mounted in bearings 71, 72 carried by the bracket 11. A sprocket 73 is operated by a chain which is connected to the main gearing of the harvester.
