Abstract

335,003. Gusseff, W. July 24, 1929. Metals, removing; electrolytes, circulating; supporting electrodes.-Apertures or cavities are formed in metal bodies by local electrolytic solution of the metal while connected as anode; metals may be cut by step-by-step formation of narrow apertures. The apparatus shown in Fig. 1 comprises a tube 3 of non-corrodible metal connected as cathode provided with insulating feet m and an insulating covering 1. Electrolyte is supplied through the tube 3 and withdrawn through the annular space surrounding it. In the modification shown in Fig. 12, the cathode 3 is mounted in a member A so as to be surrounded by and spaced from an insulating tube 1. Electrolyte is supplied by a pipe 25 through the cathode 3 and withdrawn through the space between the cathode and tube 1 leaving the member A by a pipe 19 ; it passes to a tank provided with filtering means and is returned to the apparatus by a pump. The circulation is maintained until the electrolyte has a predetermined content of the metallic salt. The end of the tube 1 abutting on the work passes through a packing-ring 2 pressed down by an implement 13. As the cavity 4 extends the tube 1 and the cathode are pushed through the packing ring. The member A is provided with a two-part ring 26 acting as cathode connection and a cap 22 connected to an insulated handle. The cross-section of the aperture formed is the same as that of the tube 1. The various parts of the member A are provided with screwed connections to facilitate removal and replacement of the cathode. The cross-section of the cathode should be the same as that of the tube but for cavities of triangular or polygonal section, the angles of the cathode section should be more accentuated than those of the cavity. By use of a cathode disposed between two insulating tubes an annular cavity may be made; by extending this completely through the metal a large aperture may be made, the core falling out on completion of the operation. A metal plate may be cut continuously by means of a cathode enclosed in a flat insulating tube provided with a cut on one of the narrow sides. The tube is inserted through an aperture in the metal and packing rings are mounted on both sides. The aperture is gradually extended on the side provided with the cut, the tube being moved accordingly. The electrolyte may be a 3-8 per cent solution of hydrochloric acid, the current density 150-300 amps per sq. cm. at 110 volts, and the velocity of the electrolyte 300-600 metres per min.
