Abstract

334,517. Turner, M. M. April 3, 1929. Etching.-Cutting-tools with multiple cutting- edges, such as files, rasps, augers, saws, broaches, and screwing dies, are renovated by immersion in successive acid baths, the cutting-edges being protected during one or more immersions and unprotected during one or more later immersions. For example, a worn file is first cleaned by boiling in caustic potash solution and then in a solution of slaked lime; the tops of the teeth are coated by a rubber, gelatine, &c., roller, &c., with a suitablevarnish such as a solution of Barbados tar in oil of turpentine; the file is immersed for about two hours in an acid bath composed of 95 parts water, 4 parts nitric acid of 40 per cent strength, and 1 part sulphuric acid of 66 per cent strength; after treating for a few minutes in caustic potash and weak sulphuric acid the varnish is removed by a circular brush; the file is again immersed for a period of one to ten hours in the mixed acid bath; finally the file is brushed under a jet of water, again immersed in the boiling solution of slaked lime, dried, and oiled or varnished.
