Abstract

333,218. Ball, C. May 6, 1929. Divided on 333,216. Vermin-destroying compositions.- Poison for rats or like vermin is prepared by mixing a finely divided solid poisonous ingredient with a baked cereal material, such as crushed maize, and .heated oil or fat so that the poison is caused) to adhere to the surface of the cereal which remains in the form of separate non-coherent particles. Baking and heating of the ingredients of the bait are necessary operations in order to ensure dryness thereof and permanent adhesion of the poison. According to an example 94 lbs. of baked crushed maize are stirred into 4 bls. of melted benzoated lard, and 2 lbs. of powdered zinc phosphide are added and the whole thoroughly mixed. Other poisons specified are chloride of mercury, barium carbonate, arsenious oxide, and lead salts; other cereals are maize meal or grits, wheat, oats, barley, middlings, and crushed biscuit; other oily substances are cotton seed oil, olive oil and mineral oil. The first Provisional Specification refers also to the use of tallow as a bait and contains an example according to which baked flaked maize is fried in oil and then ground and the poisonous ingredient mixed therewith.
