Pipes. - Return bends for pipes are made by forming a longitudinal hole in a solid bar and then bending the ends thereof into the desired positions. A solid bar is first heated at its ends and then upset to form flanges, is then bored or drilled at 4 and is finally bent to form the return bend. The flanges may have bolt holes and counterbores to receive the ends of the connecting tubes. 'The bore may be formed so that there is less metal at the part which is to form the inside of the bend than at the part which is to form the outside of the bend. This may be effected by drilling the hole eccentrically in the bar, by drilling inclined holes from opposite ends, by removing metal at 10 from a concentrically drilled bar, or by bending the middle part or, as shown in Fig. 10, the whole of the bar, prior to drilling.
