Abstract
333,010. Walker, W. D. June 24, 1929. Drawings to Specification. Composite photographs; catatype processes.- Composite photographs, especially kinematograph films, are produced by photographing a transparent film on the background illuminated from the rear, in superposition behind a film of the foreground illuminated from in front, in which the image is opaque to but reflective of light. The parts surrounding the images on the foreground film are transparent, the actors &c. being photographed in front of a white screen to produce a positive or a black screen when a negative is required. To render the images on the foreground film opaque, the emulsion side is coated with a mixture containing a colloid such as gelatin, a chromate or bichromate, e.g. ammonium bichromate, and a white pigment, e.g. Chinese white. In contact with the silver of the image the colloid becomes insoluble, binding the pigment, the mixture being then washed off the silver free parts of the film. The bichromate may be applied first and then a mixture of colloid and pigment. For television motion pictures a dark pigment, e.g. ultramarine, is used.
