Abstract

332,670. North, O. D., Hugh, P. G., and Scammell Lorries, Ltd. May 15, 1929. Energy - absorbing elements; disc; force-transmitting elements; compensating for wear.-A watercooled brake for motor vehicles comprises a rotary brake disc disposed between a stationary and coaxially movable hollow brake member having annular water chambers connected to a source of cooling medium. The cooling fluid may be obtained from the motor cooling system and is allowed to flow on brake application by a valve operated by the brake pedal. The brake comprises a disc 1, Fig. 2, sliding on splines on a hub 19 on the transmission shaft 2, a fixed disc 5 and disc 6 moved on brake application by means of arms 7b, 8b on shafts 7, 8. The arms 7<b>, 8b have ball ends engaging shoes which bear on oppositely inclined pads 15 on the disq 6 so as to equalise the brake pressure, by axial movement of the shafts 7, 8. In an alternative arrangement the arms 7b, 8<b> carry an axially slidable bar 26, Fig. 6, having inclined faces engaging the inclined faces on the disc 6. The shafts 7, 8, Fig. 2, are operated from the foot pedal by means of a balance yoke. The disc 1 is automatically centralised by means of a frictionally held ring 20 to which it is connected by studs 22 and a collar 23. Springs 21 on the studs are compressed when the brake is applied and the ring 20 is moved to a new position when wear takes place, and there is excessive movement of the disc 1. Adjusting nuts 24 locate the disc.
