Abstract

331,582. Holttum, W. R. April 5, 1929. Ironing-presses.-In a machine in which two work supports 12 carried by a rotary structure 7 are swung alternately into position beneath a stationary head 1 and raised by a fluid pressure operated ram 21a, means are provided for locking the rotary structure in position and for preventing access of fluid pressure to the ram until the press is so locked. The rotary structure 7 is secured to a hollow shaft 5 rotatably mounted in bearings 4, 6 and steam is passed from a pipe 17, through the hollow shaft, ports 14, and pipes 9 to the work supports and exhausted through pipes 13 and ports 14<a>. The pipes are formed with flexible portions 13<b> to permit vertical movement of the work supports. The work supports are provided with depending spigots 10 which slide in the structure 7 and which are engaged by the ram 21a. The shaft 5 carries two projections 29, the appropriate one of which, when one of the work supports is positioned beneath the head 1, engages and opens a valve 27 in a fluid pressure pipe 28<c>, fed through a valve 30 from a supply pipe 28. Fluid pressure is thereby admitted through a pipe 28a, Fig. 3, to a cylinder 24 to move a plunger 24<a> forwardly against a spring into an aperture 24b, Fig. 1, in the rotary structure. In so moving, the plunger 24a opens a valve 25 in a pipe 26 extending between the pipe 28<a> and the inlet to the ram cylinder 21. The cylinder is exhausted and pressure relieved by depression of a pedal 23 which operates the valve 30 to shut off the fluid supply from pipe 28 to the pipe 28<c> and simultaneously to connect the pipe lines to a pipe 34 which is open to atmosphere.
