Abstract
330,268. Haddan, R., (Corning Glass Works). March 4, 1929. Condensers. - Sheets of glass of thickness less than 0.015 inch, having a softening point preferably below 700‹ C. and having a low coefficient of expansion, are used as an insulator, particularly as the dielectric for condensers. Glass containing about 45 per cent lead oxide and having a melting temperature of about 650‹ C. is suitable. In the preferred method of production a predetermined quantity of molten glass is blown into a polygonal mould 10 to form a flat-sided blank 11, which, when blown, is placed on a table 13 and its ends are cut away. The blank is then cut along the edges of adjoining faces which are subsequently separated and cut into sheets 16, Fig. 5, for making condensers. These sheets are interleaved with copper or other conducting sheets 17, and the condenser is heated to fuse the edges of the glass and obtain coalescence between the glass and metal sheets. The fused glass forms an envelope which renders unnecessary the use of an external casing.
