Sliver-balling apparatus. - A sliver-balling machine comprises a pair of axially spaced discs 1, revoluble arbors 2 extending axially of the discs 1 normally having their ends adjacent and being retractible clear of the space between the discs, an endless band or chain 3 serving to drive the arbors and the sliver-roll which is wound thereon and finally, when the arbors are retracted, to eject the roll from between the discs. The discs 1 rotate on hollow journals 5 in the side frames 6 the arbors 2 which extend through the journals 5 being revolubly mounted on the upper ends of levers 7 pivoted at 8. The band or chain 3 is disposed around two fixed pulleys 9, 10 and a jockey pulley 11 carried on the arm 12 of a bell-crank lever 12, 13 pivoted at 14 and weighted at 16. The band 3 is driven from the pulley 10 and the bight between the pulleys 9, 10 serves to engage and drive the arbors 2 and the sliver-roll thereon. When the roll has attained a given diameter the arbors 2 are automatically retracted, e.g. by the means described in Specification 323,416, the weight 16 on the band 3 then serving to eject the roll from between the discs 1. The machine may be similarly operated manually to eject a partially formed ball. If desired each of the pulleys 9 - - 11 may be divided and the band 3 attached to a positively driven chain engaged by a sprocket wheel disposed between the pulley halves.
