, This invention relates to a mechanism for rotating a fresh web roll up to web speed or substantially so preparatory to pasting it'to the web running to a printing press.
The principal objects of this invention are to provide means whereby the web roll can be rotated from its center instead of from its circumference and means associated therewith for graduating the speed of rotation of the roll from its axis so that its surface speed shall be substantially'that of the speed of the web and to provide a graduation scale for gauging the size of the roll on a corresponding scale on the speed changing mechanism so that the two devices will cooperate and give the proper speed ratio to compensate for the variations in the diameters of the new rolls.
Other objects and advantages of the inventiorr will appear hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is an end view of a web roll supporting reel and mechanism for gauging the speed in accordance with this invention, and
Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same partly in section.
This invention relates to that type of web roll changing devices in which the fresh roll is brought up to practically the speed of the running web at the time the web is pressed against the incoming roll and the forward end of the roll attached to the web. These rolls vary in diameter and it has been customary to rotate them by a moving means contacting with the surface of the web roll. In that way the surface of the roll can be brought up to web speed without any complicated mechanism but as the pressure of the driving means is on the surface of the roll it causes considerable trouble and sometimes materially injures the web.
By this invention the roll is intended to be driven from its axis. This drivingmeans operates from the press but, of course, if all rolls were rotated at the same number of revolutions per minute the surfaces of the rolls of different diameters would not rotate at the same linear speed. This invention is designed to provide means for insuring that the surface speed of the roll shall be correct.
The reel which constitutes the supporting means for the rolls is shown as comprising two spiders Ill mounted on a shaft II which may be rotated by any desired means through a worm and worm wheel construction l2 as is well known. In the present instance the spiders are shown as provided with three arms for supporting three rolls. As is well known also, the reel is rotated around to the proper position so that one of the rolls A is brought to the position for splicing and that roll now has to be brought up to web speed at its circumference. Each of the paper rolls A is supported by chucks l3 at its opposite ends. A drum I4 is secured to one of the chucks'fll3 and is driven by a friction belt IS.
A chain l6 or other flexible connection is driven from some convenient part of a printing press and through a sprocket l1 drives one member of a well known cone pulley variable speed. transmission l8. At the other end of this transmission is a shaft I9 which carries a sprocket 20 which, through a chain 2|, drives a sprocket 22 secured to a shaft 23. This shaft is carried in brackets 24 on the frame of the printing press.
The caterpillar arm 25 is pivotally mounted on this shaft 23 to swing thereon and is moved up and down by a link 26, the operation of which is not shown herein. The caterpillar arm 25 carries a frame 21 at its free end and on this frame are rotatably mounted three pulleys 28, 29 and 30, which carry the friction belt l5 that rotates the drum l4 and therefore the roll A.
This friction belt is driven from the shaft 23 by a sprocket 3i thereon, chain 32 and sprocket 33 on the driving pulley 29. Also the shaft of this pulley 29 is provided with a sprocket 34 which, by a chain 35, drives a sprocket 36 on the shaft which carries the pulley 28. The pulley 30 is an idler and the friction belt I5 is driven from the 7 other two pulleys on this frame 21.
A dial pointer 38 is connected to the variable speed transmission in such a manner that a change of the speed ratio by the turning of hand wheel 39 causes this point 38 to move across the dial face 4|.
Each reel arm carries a slot 42 which is essentially radial with respect to the roll. Graduations are located along the side of each slot. When a new roll is placed in the reel the operator glances through the corresponding slot and observes with which graduation the edge of the roll corresponds. Then by turning handwheel 39 so that the pointer 38 points to the corresponding number on .the dial face M the variable speed transmission is automatically set to the proper speed ratio for driving this particular size roll at the desired speed for splicing. This setting may be made at any time prior to pasting so that when the driving device is lowered against drum It the incoming roll will be brought up to the proper speed without further manipulation.
Thus it will be seen that a mechanism is provided for speeding up an incoming roll preparatory to splicing by the application of power through the center of the roll with easy and simple means for adjusting the speed ratio of the driving mechanism to compensate for different diameter rolls.
Although I have illustrated and described only one form of the invention I am aware of the fact that modifications can be made therein by any person skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention as expressed in the claims. Therefore I do not wish to be limited in this respect but what I-do claim is:
1. In a web change mechanism, the combination with means for supporting a fresh web roll, means for rotating the fresh web roll on its own axis comprising a drum connected with the fresh web roll at its center and means for rotating the drum, of means for operating said driving means including a speed ratio changing mechanism, and an adjusting means for the speed ratio changing mechanism, comprising a scale and pointer, wherebywhen the adjusting means is set to bring the pointer to a certain position on the scale a fresh web roll of a diameter represented by that position on the scale will be rotated at web speed.
2. In a Web change mechanism, the combination of a support for a fresh web roll, a drum rotatable with the fresh web roll, means for rotating the drum, a speed ratio changing mechanism through which the drum rotating means is driven, an adjusting device for the speed ratio changing mechanism, a pointer connected with the adjusting device to be operated in proportion thereto, a scale over which the pointer passes and means for indicating the diameter of the web roll, the scale and last named means being calibrated to provide a speed of rotation for the fresh web roll that will give its surface a speed substantially equal to that of the running web.
3. A web changing mechanism comprising a fresh web roll support, a drum connected with the fresh web roll at its center, of means for rotating the drum at a substantially even speed, and means associated with said last mentioned means for graduating the speed of rotation of the roll from its axis so that its surface speed shall be substantially that of the speed of the web.
4. In a web changing mechanism, the combination with means for driving the fresh web roll through the axis thereof, comprising a drum connected with the fresh web roll at its center, of a speed ratio changing mechanism connected with said drum and adjustable to compensate for the size of said fresh roll.
5. In a web change mechanism, the combination of a press driven shaft, a speed ratio changing mechanism connected thereto, means for rotating a fresh roll through its central axis preparatory to splicing, means for connecting said means to the speed ratio changing mechanism, and means for adjusting said speed ratio changing mechanism to compensate for the diameter
