Abstract

329,829. Allman, E. J., and Hilton, T. H. May 14, 1929. Tread surfaces.-Tyre gaiters are attached by hooked members engaging a fixed abutment at one side of the wheel rim and tensioning devices engaging a bracket attached at the other side of the rim. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the gaiter consists of a metal plate 3 with tread projections 3a fitted at one edge with a plate 7 which is adjustably connected to a hook 6 adapted to engage a lug 4 on the rim. The opposite edge of the gaiter is connected by hooks 16 to L-shaped links 17 which are adapted to engage ratchet-teeth 2 on the flanged end 1<b> of a bracket 1 secured to the rim. The inner ends of the links 17 are connected by an arm 18 pivoted to one of the links and notched to engage a pin 19 on the other link, the parts being locked by a sliding sleeve 20. In the modification shown in Fig. 7, the links 17 are replaced by collars 31 fitted over the divergent arms 1<c> of the bracket-flange 1<b>. The gaiter may consist of transverse chains, or, as shown in Fig. 9, of chains 29 and a plate 30. For use on metal tyres, the gaiter may be fitted with a rubber lining. Fig 10 shows a tool for assembling the gaiter comprising a lever 26 having a nose 26<a> to engage a notch 26b in the flange 1<b>, and a pivoted hook 25 to engage a hole 25b in the plate 8.
