To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. HOLYBEE,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Hotchkiss, in the county of Delta and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chain Appliers, of which the following-is a specification. reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to chain appliers,
and more particularly to a device for applying the anti-skid chainsof automobiles to the wheels thereof.
An important object of the invention is to provide in a device of this character means for attaching the chain to and detaching the chain from the applying device proper.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be very readily employed for attaching the chain to the automobile in such a manner that the rotation of the wheel will cause the chain to be placed thereabout so that the ends may be joined.
A further object is to provide a device of this character which is simple in construction and arrangement, durable in service and a general improvement in the art.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which with but a slight modification is capable of use for attaching temporary mud chains of the single cross chain type.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent throughout the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention and 1 wherein like reference characters designate like parts throughout:
Figure 1 is a side elevation showing a chain applier constructed in accordance with my invention in use for applying a chain to a tire;

Referring now to the drawings and more particularly to Figures 1 to 5 thereof, the numeral 10 indicates a substantially U- shaped member, the bight portion 11 of which is adapted to engage a spoke of the wheel to which the chain is to be applied. The arms 12 of the member 10 are spaced apart at their extremities a suflicient distance to receive therebet-ween the telly of the wheel and the inner portions of the tire and are provided upon their ends with angular portions or ears 13, the included angle of the ears and arms being formed to provide a link receiving cove 14.
To these ears 13 are pivotally connected levers 15 each having a link receiving notch 16 adapted for the reception of an end link L of the side chain C of the anti-skid chain (1, the levers being constructed so that after receiving the link their rotation causes the link to be directed into the link receiving cove 14. The wall 17 of the notch 16 is so constructed that when the lever is in closed position and has its free end abutting the arm with which it is connected. the wall 17 is engaged by the link so as to hold the free end of the lever in engagement with the arm 12 and prevent removal of the chain.
In the use of my device the same is engaged about a spoke of the wheel to which the chain is to be applied with the arms 12 directed against the direction of rotation of the wheel. The end links L of the side chains C are then engaged in the notches 16 of the levers and the levers rotated to bring these chains into engagement with the link receiving cove 14. In applying the member 10 to the wheel it is so applied that the arms 12 are directed toward the periphery of the wheeland the ears 13 directed inwardly toward the hub thereof so that the levers 15 when in'the closed position will be arranged upon the side of the arms 12 remote from the periphery of the wheel. These levers are of such width that they are protected by the arms against the action of mud or dirt in which the wheel may be rotating so as to prevent any tendency of opening of the levers. This tendency is further prevented by the engagement of the end link L with the wall 17 of the notch 16. In removing the device the levers are rotated to withdraw the end link L from the link receiving cove 14c, avoiding the necessity of working with the muddy chain to remove the link from its engagement with the arms as is necessary where a similar hook is provided at the ends of the arms, it being understood that the rotation of the wheel will tend to draw the chain very tightly into the cove 14, rendering its removal difficult. The links being removed from the ends of the arms, the device may be removed and the ends of the chains connected in the usual manner.
In the form shown in Figures 6 and 7 I have illustrated modifications of the invention hereinbefore set forth. In this form of the invention the bight portion 11 of the U-shaped member is straight 'and the arms thereof diverge from one another, this construction being employed so that the bight portion will tit flatly against the under surface of the felly of the wheel to which the device is applied with the arms closely embracing the sides of the rim. If desired, instead of providing upon both of the arms of the device an angular portion 13 and alever 15, one end of one arm may be provided with an eye 18 as shown in Figure 7 to which a short section of chain 19 is permanently connected at one end, this section being adapted to pass about the periphery of the tire and engage with the link receiving cove 14 of the other arm in the manner hereinbefore described.
From the foregoing it is believed to be obvious that a chain applierconstructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for the purpose for which it is intended for the reason that it provides means for readily attaching and detaching a chain and by reason of the fact that the construction thereof is so simple as to render the same comparatively inexpensively manufactured. It will furthermore be obvious thatthe construction thereof as hereinbefore set forth is capable of some change and modification without materially departing from the spirit of my invention and I accordingly do not limit myself thereto except as hereinafter claimed.

In a device of the ty e described, a substantially U-shaped mem er provided upon the extremities of the arms thereof with angular portions, the junction of the arms with the angular portions being formed in the included angles thereof to provide link receiving coves, and a lever pivoted to each of said angular portions and being provided with a link receiving notch adapted to direct an end. link of the chain to be applied into the link receiving cove.
2. In a device of the type described, a substantially U-shaped member provided upon the extremities of the arms thereof with angular portions, the junction of the arms with the angular portions being formed in the included angles thereof to provide link receiving coves, and a lever pivoted to each of said angular portions and being provided with a link receiving notch adaptedto direct an end link of the chain to be applied into the link receiving cove, said levers lying behind and being protected by said arms.
3. In a device of the type described, a substantially U-shaped portion provided upon the end of one arm thereof with means for attaching thereto one end of a chain, the other of the arms being provided with an angular portion, the junction of the last named arm with the angular portion being formed in the included angle thereof to provide a link receiving cove, and a lever pivoted to said angular portion and provided with a link receiving notch adapted to receive and direct an end link of the chain into the link receiving cove.
4. In a device of the type described, a substantially U-shaped portion provided upon the end of one arm thereof with means for attaching thereto one end of a chain, the other of the arms being provided with an angular portion, the junction of the last named arm with the angular portion being formed in the included angle thereof to provide a link receiving cove, and a, lever pivoted to said-angular portion and provided with a link receiving notch adapted to receive and direct an end link of the chain into the link receiving cove, said lever lying behind and being protected by said arm.
