Abstract

329,328. Irvine, M. M. Feb. 22, 1929. Diaphragms; transmitters in which a soundcontrolled light-beam acts on a photo-electric element.-A. diaphragm for use in the recording or reproduction of sound or other vibratory motion is provided with one or more circuitous electrically conducting paths formed of electrolytically deposited material. According to one method of forming such a diaphragm, the outline of a spiral coil is drawn and then photographed. The positive print of this photograph is taken on a sheet of electric insulating material, such as glass, mica, celluloid or insulated metal, coated with a sensitizing material such as silver emulsion and copper or other electric conducting material is then electrolytically deposited on the silvered outline of the coil. A second spiral coil may also be deposited on the reverse side of the diaphragm, the two coils being joined at the centre automatically by piercing the diaphragm centrally before depositing the conducting material thereon. The external leads, are soldered or otherwise attached to the outermost coils of the spirals and may be used for supporting or positioning the diaphragm. The diaphragm may be used in microphones or loud-speakers and when the base or diaphragm proper is formed of transparent material it is particularly suitable as a diaphragm or graticule for photo-electric recording or reproduction of sound e.g. as described in Specification 329,320, [Class 40 (ii), Phonographs &c.]. The diaphragm may also be made by a photo-etching process in which case it is completely electroplated, the plating is then coated with a photographic emulsion, then printed to form a spiral line thereon and finally treated in the usual way for photo etching.
