Abstract
329,115. Nordberg Manufacturing Co., (Assignees of Talboys, H. H.). Feb. 16, 1929, [Convention date]. Plant for laying track. - A machine for raising railway tracks consists of a carriage with two jacks operating a ground shoe, the jacks lifting a frame structure connected to the carriage without exerting pressure on the carriage. The carriage consists of angles 22, 23, Fig. 1, tied by channels 24 connected by girders 25 carrying yokes 30. Each yoke carries an insulated rail-engaging dog 29 insulated from links 38 connected to a handle 45 operating the dogs and engaged by brakes 46, 47. The yokes 30 are also connected by tie rods 57, 77 to members 57 each carrying a nut engaging the jack-screw 65 provided at each end of the ground shoe 68. Each nut has a gear wheel 63 meshing with a spur wheel 116 on a stub shaft 115, Fig. 11, carrying a member 114 with two sets of teeth 114<a>, 114<b> in constant mesh with bevel wheels 93 of unequal diameters. Either of the wheels 93 may be clutched to the propeller shaft 89 by a plate 97 carried by pins 98 mounted in a spider 96 integral with a wheel 93. The plate 97 floats between a hub 101 fast on the shaft 89 and a ring 102 sliding on the hub 101 and actuated bv cams 103. These cams are operated by links 105 from a sliding hub 106 actuated by yokes 113 adjustably secured on a rod 108 held central between bearings 109 by springs 111 and moved into either clutch position by a pivoted handle 117. This mechanism enables the track to be lowered about twice as quickly as it is raised. Shafts 89 are rotated by sprockets 88 driven by an internal-combustion engine 81 governed by a lever 121 mounted for convenience on one of the handles 117. The shafts may be provided with hand-cranks for manual operation. To hold the carriage stationary while in use, the operator's platform 129, Fig. 1, is clipped to a girder 25 and is hung from a shaft 126 carrying brake blocks 125 normally held clear of the wheels 17 by springs 128. The wheels 17 have wooden centres 21 to insulate them from the axles' 18. The carriage carries a sighting- target 139, Fig. 1, mounted on a rod which either rests on the head of the rail 15 or is rotated within the carriage and held above the rail.
