- 3 Claims; -(o1. 1444a) This invention relates to a machine for drilling railroad ties. I w
Moreparticularly stated, theinvention relateslto a machine adapted fortransportingon a 5 railroad track and having means for drilling spike holes in railroad ties for receiving screw spikes; .It is very essential ioria'se'cure spiking down of the rails that the spikes be driven or screwed in at right angles to the rail or rail flanga J In order to do this it is necessary that the spike holes be drilled at thisangle. A
This invention has for-its salient object 'to provide apparatusof the character specified soiconstructed and arranged that spike holes will be 15 drilled. and spikes will be driven atright angles'to the rails and ties. I 1
Another objector the invention is to provide apparatus of the character describedthat is simple and practical in construction and efficient in operation. a.
Further objectsof the' invention will appear from the following specification taken in connection with the drawings which form a part of this application, and in which Fig. 1 is an elevational'view of apparatus constructed in accordance with the invention;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the structure shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an end elevation, partly in section, of the structure shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional elevation of the drill head and connected parts; and
Fig. 5 is a sectional elevation taken substantially on line 55 of Fig. 4.
The invention briefly described comprises a frame having wheels or rollers adapted to rest on a track, a motor being mountedon the frame and connected to drive a power shaft thereon. Connected to the frame by parallel links is a drill 40 head, operative driving connections being provided between the drill head and power shaft.
The parallel links are of equal length and by reason of the link connection the drill will always be maintained vertical or at right angles to the rails and rail flanges during the drilling of the holes in the ties.
Further details of the invention will appear from the following description.
In the particular embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawings a motor M is mounted on a bed which is supported on angle iron brackets 11 and 12 which in turn are mounted on an axle 13. The axle 1123 has rotatably mounted on one end thereof a roller 15 which is cylindrical in shape and rests on one of the rails 16.
extending upwardly from the tool head H and by The otherend-of' the axle13 has rotatably mounted thereona pair of flanged wheelsl'? and 18 which are adapted to rest on the other rail 19.
The wheels 17a'nd 18 are disposed between a pairofplates20 and 21 whichare connected by 5 cross rods or bolts 22 and 23 at the lower. front and rear ends thereof and also by a cross-rod24 at the upper ends of :the plates and a rod 25 interme-w, diatethe upper and lower ends. A pair of rollers 26 and 27 are; mounted on' 10 the "cross rods or bolts .22.and 2 3 and it will,
be noted that these rollers are cylindrical and are adapted to rest on the upper surfaceof the raill19 in front of and in theurear of the wheels 17 and 18. The inner plate "20 is'secured to,- the; 15 bracket 12. I
The cross rods 24 and 25 have mounted thereon intermediate the plates20 and-21 sleeves 30 and 31. On these sleeves are pivotally mounted two setsof para'llellinks, each set'comprising a pair of links; The upper pair of links 32 are. mounted on the sleeve 30 and are pivoted at their otherv ends, as shown at 33, to a rod 34 secured to the upper end of a tool head H. The lower link 35 is equal in length to the upper links and is pivoted at 36 to a rod 37 also carried by the tool head H. The upper and lower linksare equal in length and in the embodiment of the invention illustrated the rods 24 and 25 on the frame are vertically disposed one above the other and the pivotal con- 30 nections of the other ends of the links to the tool head are also vertically disposed one above the other. In order to return the links and tool head to elevated position a spring 38 is connected to cross rod 24 and to the lower link 35. After the drill has gone through the tie being drilled, the links and tool head will automatically rise .upon release of downward pressure thereon.
A handle 40 is fixedly mounted on a bracket 41 means of this handle the tool head can be raised and lowered. However, by reason of the parallel link connection to the frame the tool head will always be disposed at right angles to the rails and flanges carried thereby. Q
The motor M has a power driven shaft 42 which extends through the frame member 20 and has mounted thereon a sleeve or hub 43 provided with a pair of grooved pulleys 44 and 45.
The toolhead has rotatably mounted therein in roller bearings a driven shaft 46 on the ends of which are mounted grooved pulleys or sheaves 4'7 and 48. Attention is called to the fact that the shaft 42 is located between the pivotal connections of the links to the frame and that the shaft 46 is located between the pivotal connections of the links to the-tool head. Thus, the
distance between the sheaves on these shafts remains uniform in all positions of adjustment of the tool head. The pulleys 44 and 45 are connected to drive the pulleys 4'7 and 48 by means of belts 49. Y
The shaft 46 has also secured thereto a spiral gear 50 which meshes with a spiral gear 51 keyed to a vertical toolishaft 52. The shaft/52 is provided with a suitable socket or chuck 53 adapted to receive a drill or bit 54.
The apparatus is shown in Fig. 2 in the position taken when a spike hole is to be drillediin the outer flange of the rail; In this figure it will be noted that the axle 13 is disposed .at anangle to the rails and this statement also appliesto the parallel links. This is permitted by'reason of the clearance between the flanges on the-wheels 17" and 18 and the outer edges of the rail 19 and also by reason of the fact-that the rolls 26 and 27 and the roller 15 are cylindrical and rest on the tops of the rails.
. By reason of the parallel link connection of the tool head to the framecarried by the axle 13, as pressure is exerted on the handle 40 andv the drill 54 is forced downwardly into the tie,'. the
.drill will always be maintained at right angles to the rail, rail flange andtie. It will be understood that as the drill or bit moves downwardly into the tie the motor, frame and axle onwhich the frame is mounted can move along the rails toward the tool head by reason of the free rolling of the Wheels 17 and '78 and. the rollersal'5, 26
and 27. The rotation of the motor; shaft 42 will be communicated to the shaft 46 on the tool head by' the belt driveconnection'described and the shaft 46 will drive the tool shaft 52 by reaso of the spiral gear connection.
Although one specific embodiment'of the invention has been particularly shown and "described, it will beunderstood that the invention shaft thereon, parallel link connections between said frame and said tool head and a driving connection between said shafts operative in all positions of the head relative to the frame. a
2. Apparatus of the character described comprising an axle, a cylindrical roller on one end thereof, oppositely facing flanged wheels on the other end thereof, a frame on the axle, a drive shaft on the'frame, a tool head having a driven shaft thereon, parallel link connections between said frame andsaid tool head-and a driving'connection between said shafts operative in all positions of the. head relative 'to. the frame, the drive shaft and driven shaft being located on the frame and head between the link connections thereto.
3. Apparatus of the character described comprising an axle, a cylindrical roller on one end thereof, oppositely facingflangedwheels on the other endthereof, a frame on the axle, rollers on the framein' front and in the rear of said flanged wheels and engageable with the track on which the wheels rest, a drive shaft on the frame, a tool head having a tool shaft thereon, parallel linkconnections between said frame and said tool head and a driving connection between said shafts operative in all positions of the head relative to the frame.
