Resistance ovens.-An apparatus for disinfecting and sterilizing clothes, &c. by means of hot air, comprises a container 1 of metal, such as steel, with a heat insulating covering 6 and a sheet metal sheath 7, and an airtight, hinged, cover 3 with locking and holding down screw means 5. Groups of electric heating units 11 are disposed around the walls, and each unit has a bar or bent plate guard 12. A pump of any known kind adapted to serve as a compression or exhaust pump may be hand operated is mounted on the outside of the chamber, and is connected to a branch 15 of a horizontal coil 16 in the lower part of the chamber. Air can pass through apertures in the coil into the chamber. The current supplied to the heating units is controlled by a thermostat. The chamber may be vertical or horizontal, or cylindrical, elliptical, or other form, and may be mounted on wheels or on a wheeled chassis, and means for the introduction of a disinfectant may be provided. Articles to be treated are placed in a cage 8 of perforated sheet metal or mesh-work, the cage lowered on to a seat 10, and the cover 3 closed. After the temperature of the air has been raised, air is pumped through the coil 16, where it is heated, until a pressure considerably above atmospheric has been obtained. A partial vacuum may be created in the apparatus before or after the air is compressed. According to the Provisional Specification, the air may be maintained at atmospheric pressure or a partial vacuum may he maintained in the chamber.
