Abstract

328,908. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Nov. 1, 1928. Adhesives.-Liquid oily polymerization products of butadiene containing no solid polymers, and suitable as adhesive and coating agents are made by heating butadiene to above 40‹ C., if desired under pressure, and stopping the process before the production of solid polymers. The pressure employed may be as much as 200 atmospheres or more. Inorganic catalysts such as finely divided metals or organic catalysts such as aliphatic or aromatic umines may be used, and a diluent may be employed, in which case isoprene may be used instead of butadiene. The oil obtained from butadiene at 150-220‹ C.. freed from volatile constituents if such be present, may be clarified by animal charcoal and is then colourless ; the oils obtained above 220‹ C. are very viscous and dry more quickly, The oils may be used to improve the adhesive power and flexibility of lacquers and the adhesive power of binding agents such as glue; the coatings may be heated below 100‹ C. to hasten the drying. In the examples (1) (2) (3) and (4) butadiene is heated in an autoclave to 200‹ C., 380‹ C., 300‹ and 135‹ C. respectively; in the third case the oil is distilled up to 140‹ C. to remove volatile constituents, and may be mixed with tricresyl phosphate and used as a lacquer which is dried at 85‹ C - the film may be taken off from the substratum, and is strong and elastic; (5) butadiene is heated with aniline benzene or cyclohexene; the aniline &c. is distilled off and the liquid product may be mixed with linseed oil with or without boiled oil, copal, and cobalt linoleate; (6) butadiene is introduced at 2 atmospheres pressure into a closed vessel containing dimethyl aniline benzene or anisol and aluminium chloride at 150‹ C., the dimethyl aniline &c. being separated from the product by distillation; (7) butadiene is added to a mixture of tetra-hydrostyrene or ether and sodium in a pressure vessel and heated to 100‹ C. ; (8) isoprene and tetrahydrostyrene are heated in a pressure vesseol at 200‹ C. Specifications 20648/12 and 156,116, [both in Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], are referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 29277/09, (Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.].
