Abstract

328,849. Triggs, W. W., (Norton Co.). June 24, 1929. Lenses, grinding and polishing. - A machine for grinding both surfaces of a lens &c. simultaneously, has a cage 30 with recesses 31 in which the lenses 32 are mounted, held between a non-rotatable lap 16 and a rotatable lap 25. The grinding surfaces, which may be of abrasive material or of metal carrying loose abrasive, are zones of spheres concentric with the portion of the cage between them. A head 12, adjustable vertically and rotatably, carries a vertically adjustable rack bar 13 to which is attached, with provision for a slight vertical movement, the lap 16. The other lap is bolted to arms 24 attached to a sleeve 23 rotatable by gears 21 and 22 from a shaft 20. An inner sleeve 35 rotated with it but at a different speed by a system of gears 36, carries a head 33 on which are mounted studs 41 carrying pinions 42 which engage with a fixed pinion 43 on a central spindle, thus causing them to rotate about their axes as they revolve about the spindle 44. The studs carry discs 51 adjustably held in position by bolts passing through slots 64, pins 50 being mounted on the discs, their heads 61 engaging with cup bearings 58, two of them making a sliding fit and the third a loose fit. The complex motion of the pins is imparted to the cage, and uniform wear of the laps is ensured. Specification 254,919 is referred to.
