Counting by weighing.-Relates to counting scales of the kind having a number of ratio pans at fixed leverages to a commodity receiver and wherein a load-counterbalancing and indicating mechanism is brought to a predetermined point when a load on the commodity receiver is balanced by specimens in the ratio pans. The invention comprises in combination a housing 14 in which is located indicating mechanism including a chart 19 bearing a single indicium, a load lever 5 supporting the commodity receiver 9 and directly connected to the indicating mechanism, a ratiolever 27 supporting the ratio pans 32, 33, and a member 23 extending from the load lever and connected by a link 25 to the ratio lever. The ratio lever is fulcrumed on a bracket 29 attached outside the casing. Assuming the leverages of the ratio pans 32, 33 to be respectively 9: 1 and 99: 1, and it is desired to ascertain the number of articles in a lot placed in the pan 9, the operator transfers some of the articles to the pans 32, 33 until the pointer 18 is brought to the predetermined point on the chart, the final adjustment being made by merely abstracting one or twoarticles from the pan 9 without transferring them to the ratio pans. The number of articles in the pans 32 and 33 respectively will then represent the tens and hundreds in the total count, the units being represented by the number last abstracted from the commodity pan. Other leverages may be adopted for the ratio pans to suit other conditions, for example, for use when packing articles in gross or half-gross lots.
