Driving; speed-regulating; starting and stopping.-A gramophone turntable is driven throughout playing of a record by the energy from a flywheel which is set in motion, by a drive from a hand-lever or a pedal, to the required speed and drives the turntable spindle through a friction wheel engaging a friction disc on the spindle and movable radially thereof under the control of a governor on the flywheel shaft. A friction disc C, Fig. 1, rotates with, but can slide along, the spindle B of the turntable A and is driven by a friction disc D rotating with, but slidable on, a shaft F rotated by the revolving flywheel G fixed thereto, the position of the friction disc being controlled by a governor J on the flywheel shaft F, so that it is moved radially of the disc and inwardly as the speed of the flywheel decreases. The governors can be adjusted by a screwed boss 0, and the turntable spindle is mounted in a bracket P, Fig. 3, adjustable by a screwed rod R about a pivot Q to adjust the initial position of the disc C. The flywheel is set in motion by a hand-lever or a pedal M acting through a link, gearing V, V<1>, and a clutch W, which is disengaged by a reversal of the manual power owing to the inclination of the teeth of the gearing V, V<1>. When the machine is at rest, the disc C is raised clear of the wheel D by a pivoted lever T supported on a pivoted arm S, which arm is displaced by the wheel D under the action of the governor when the flywheel attains the required maximum speed, so that the disc descends into contact with the wheel to be driven thereby. The disc can be raised to arrest the turntable at any time by depression of a spindle U to rock the lever T.
