Abstract

328,285. Accounting & Tabulating Corporation of Great Britain, Ltd., and Thomas, A. Jan, 21, 1929. Divided on 328,255. Selective punching-machines. - In a machine in which a carriage with a column of setting members travel step by step over a plurality of columns of, set-bars which are locked by latch-bars and pawls, and the card is punched on depression of a key by raising the die plate after all punch set-bars have been latched, a pawl release bar is movable in one direction to actuate the pawls and in another direction to allow certain pawls to be rendered inoperative. The carriage 1 is urged to the right, Fig. 1, during the selecting operation by a spring drum 1<a> and escapement mechanism 33, and is restored to starting position by the swinging of an arm 5 carrying a jockey pulley 3, by a roller 9 on a gear 6. Depression of a key 10, for effecting the punching operation, operates a Bowden wire 11 to swing a lever 12 moving a rod 17 axially. This rod 17 throws in a one-revolution clutch to connect a motor 19 to the gear 6. The cord 2a connected to the carriage and the jockey pulley is anchored to a wheel 4 urged by spring pressure against a stop. If the carriage is to be returned to an intermediate position the spring is stressed when the carriage is arrested by clips 49. To prevent damage in case the wheel 4 turns one revolution for small travels a modified wheel 4, Fig. 4 (not shown), is used. The set-bars are latched by latch-bars controlled by pawl 27 spanned by a release-bar 28. Actuation of a hand-lever 30 releases all the latch-bars simultaneously. To release individual latches, a member 31 pivoted on the escapement-wheel shaft 32 carries a sliding plate 34 connected by a link 35 to a rocking lever 37 opemtinga a single latch-bar. The bar 28 may be operated by power on return of the carriage by the gear 16 actuating a lever 47 on the rod 43 carrying an arm 42 engaging the lever 30. To operate the bar 28 by hand the rod 43 is moved axially to disengage the lever 47 by an inclined push-lever 45. For back-spacing, a pawl 39 on the plate 34 engages the carriage rack 40 when the member 31 is rocked. Operation of a handlever 41 rocks the member 31 and pressure through the hand-lever moves the carriage back and resets a column of selector-bars. Individual pawls'27 are made inoperative by raising the bar 28 by the lever 3,0 and swinging the latches out of position. Specification 328,255 is referred to.
