Coiling; reeling.-In a machine for armouring cables or other flexible cores by coiling flexible metallic strip, formed by rolls i n t o interlocking shape, on a core fed through a hollow rotating mandrel, and then compressing it on the core, the reel or reels carrying the core are connected to the mandrel through a clutch so as to control the rate at which the core is rotated and thus to maintain it at the correct twist relatively to the laying-on and compressing of the armouring in spite of variations in the hardness of the strip. The strip is drawn through forming dies or rollers to impart thereto an interlocking shape by a drum 38 which is driven by gearing 43, 42, 40, 39 from the shaft 15. The hollow shaft 11 which carries a hollow mandrel 16 with a reduced end 17 is driven from the shaft 15 by gearing 12, 13. The carrier 21 for the reels 22 of core material is mounted on a shaft 18 rotated by chain gears 47, 46 from the shaft 11 through a clutch 49 controlled by a pedal 50. The armoured cable is drawn by a winding drum 25 first between a pair of adjustable soft pads 55 for removing excess oil and for exerting a preliminary compression on the armouring and then through a tapered helically grooved die 37 for compressing the armouring upon the core. The die may be replaced by a series of stationary grooved tapered rollers 59, Fig. 5, arranged in stepped formation longitudinally so that each roller overlaps one of the other rollers for about half its length to effect a progressive compression of the armouring. Each roller is rotatably mounted in a bracket 61 adjustable radially by a screw 63 in a bearing 62 which is carried by a slidable rod 64 held in adjusted position by a screw 67. The winding drum 25 is mounted in a carrier 26 rotated by chain gear 29, the drum being rotated through a. friction coupling by bevel gear 35, 34 and spur gear 31, 30 from the shaft 28.
