Abstract
328,004. Thornycroft & Co., Ltd., J. I., Thornycroft, T., and Barford, V. G. Jan. 11, 1929. Flywheels.- A device adapted to damp torsional vibrations of a crank shaft at moderate and at high speeds comprises a floating ring surrounding one or more of the crank webs and frictionally engaged by a weight pressed by springs against the ring. In Fig. 1 the webs b of the crank shaft a are encircled by floating rings h in which are guided weights g pressed against the rings by springs k mounted in tubular extensions f of frames e secured to the crank web.. In Fig. 3 a frame n secured to the crank web has pins r, extending into the weight g guided in a groove h<1> in the ring h surrounding the frame. Springs s are held in compression between the frame n and the weight g. The coiled springs s may be replaced by springs of laminar form and made integral with the frame. In a modified construction Figs. 8, 9 the floating ring h is carried on the flange 1 of a ring 1 spigoted to the crank shaft, and held against rotation by a pin 4 passing into the crank pin. The centrifugally-operated weight g guided between the ring 1 and a cover plate 2 is pressed against the inner surface of the ring by springs k and gaps 1 are made in the flange 1 of a ring 1 spigoted to the crank shaft, and held against rotation by a pin 4 passing into the crank pin. The centrifugally-operated weight g guided between the ring 1 and a cover plate 2 is pressed against the inner surface of the ring by springs k and gaps 1 are made in the flange 1 of the ring 1 to allow the operation of the weight.
