Universal - feed sewing - machines. - In the universal feed embroidery machine of the Bonnaz type for large size work such as carpets and rugs, described in the concurrent Specification 327,941, means are provided whereby a selected stitch length is uniform throughout a seam regardless of changes in the direction of feed. The feed mechanism, except for the feed-length adjusting devices, is the same as that described in Specification 152,092, anl the feeding and stitch forming devices are manually controlled from the handle 69 in the manner described in Specification 327,941. The feed-foot or ring 78 is detachably secured on the lower end of a feed-bar 79 supported at its upper end for universal movement about transverse pivots 81. The workadvancing movements of the feed foot 78 are derived from a cam 88 on the shaft 9, which cam actuates a lever 89 to engage a lug 90 projecting from a sleeve 91 sliding vertically in the frame 5. The lever 89 lowers the sleeve 91 against the spring 92, and a forked arm 95 engages the collar 96 of the fulcrum block 97 to slide in the cylinder 10. The fulcrum block 97 has arcuate guideways 101 on opposite flat faces engaging ribs 102 on spaced arms 103 of a feedfinger actuating cam 104. The cam is secured in positions above the centre of curvature of the ribs 102 by a screw 99 passing through a hole 98 in the block 97 and slots 105 in the feed cam, Fig. 4. The cam 104 is provided with a cam groove 107 engaged by the end of the feed lever 108 fulcrummed between ears 109 secured to the cylinder 10, to guide a feed collar 110 embraced by a ring 112 on the feed-bar 79. Work supports. The work support 121 is dished to facilitate a firm grip of the feed ring teeth 120 on the material. Looper mechanism. The spiral gear 17 rotating the looper shaft 16 is set for producing chain- or drop-stitches by axi'al movement by the nut 22.
