Casting and moulding slag.-In apparatus for recovering the heat of slag by passing it through a closed chamber in counter-current to a stream of air, the slag is used in the form of slabs or blocks which are produced by casting and partial solidification outside the heat-recovery chamber. In the form shown, a molding device comprising a rotary member 16 carrying moulds 15 is disposed adjacent the inlet of a horizontal chamber 13 having damper-controlled inlet and outlet passages 21, 22, for the air, and provided with a roller conveyer 14 for transporting the partially solidified blocks 5 through the chamber to the air-lock discharge hopper 25. At its inlet end, the chamber 13 is formed with a charging lock 24 having vertically movable doors 28, 29 operated by the movement of a charging ram 19 which is connected by links to the movable bottoms 15<a> of the moulds 15. As the member 16 rotates the bottoms 15<a> of the moulds adjacent the door 28 are raised, to position any desired number of blocks 41, e.g. three, in front of the pusher 19, by the engagement of rollers 17<a> with a fixed ramp 18. To the pusher 19 is secured a cam 20 which acts on a roller 31 carried by a weighted arm 32 connected by a link 35 and crank 36 to a rocking-lever 38. The ends of the latter engage in stirrups 39, 40 attached to the upper edges of the doors 28, 29 which are thus alternately operated in timed relationship with the pusher 19.
