Cauldrons.-A method of mixing liquids initially at different temperatures, such as hot pitch and tar, the temperature of which during the mixing process has to be maintained within prescribed limits, consists in continuously passing one liquid through a series of mixing vessels and adding thereto in the various compartments one or more other liquids with or without further quantities of the first liquid to maintain the appropriate temperature in each compartment. The apparatus consists of a tank 1 divided into compartments by baffles 8, 9 extending partly across the tank to form weirs, so that the liquid leaves the top of one compartment and enters the bottom of the next, or vice versa. Each compartment is furnished with a stirrer 17, the stirrers being set at varying angles along the common shaft 18, and the liquids are supplied by valve-controlled pipes 11.
