Abstract
326,859. Hayden, H., R. Nov. 22, 1928. Thermionic amplifiers and deteetors.-In a multi-stage thermionicvalve circuit supplied from a source of varying voltage, inter-valve couplings are so constructed and arranged that the effect of the varying voltage on the plate circuit of the last valve 46 is neutralized by the variations applied to its grid by the net effect of the varying voltage of the source on the preceding valves. The source of varying voltage comprises a rectifier 89, which supplies plate current through an impedance 94 and shunt condensers 98, 99 arranged on opposite sides of the impedance and having a combined capacity of less than 7 microfarads. Resistance-capacity coupled amplifying-valves 30, 40, 46 are connected across the output 93, 95 from the filter, and a detecting-valve 16 is connected across a condenser 110 in series with a variable resistance 100. Hum is eliminated by varying the plate voltage of the detector by the resistance 100, and by varying the grid bias of the amplifying-valves by a potentiometer 65 and of the detecting-valve by a variable grid leak 21 and condenser 20. A grid coil 13 is wound on a cylindrical former and spaced from an aerial coil 12 by grooved strips, and a reaction coil 22 is wound on a cylindrical former within the grid coil, and mounted on a rotary spindle (Figs. 2-5, not shown).
